Brits are falling short when it comes to making the most of our time on holiday, spending less than a quarter (5 hours 42 mins) of each day exploring our holiday destination, new research shows.

Holiday comparison site surveyed the nation find out how Brits spend their days on holiday and whether or not they make the most of their destination.

From wasting time hungover to spending hours getting ready, the research revealed a huge 30% admit they should make better use their time while abroad.

In order to prove there are better ways to make the most of your time on holiday, also treated four lifestyle bloggers to the ultimate Ibiza getaway, involving a mixture of activities covering everything from parasailing to pool parties.

The results of the research show instead of discovering the local culture, Brits spend over 12 hours a day of their precious holiday time on activities they normally do at home including:

Getting ready (dressed,hair, makeup etc.) to sit by the pool or on the beach 2 hours 30 mins
Getting ready (dressed,hair, makeup etc.) to go out on an evening 2 hours 48 mins

Being hungover 2 hours 18 mins

The research reveals that more than a quarter (26%) of British holidaymakers spend one hour a day on social media while abroad, with 10% of 25-34 year olds spending up to three hours a day catching up with their friends’ latest posts and tweets.

Birmingham appears to be the city most addicted to social media, with residents admitting to spending an average of 2 hours 42 minutes daily on social media, closely followed by London  at 2 hours 36 minutes.

However, it’s not just the pull of social media that is distracting people from seeing the sights, as more than a quarter (28%) of Brits spend up to 4 hours a day drunk and a fifth (21%) spend up to four hours nursing a hangover everyday during their getaways.

When it comes to preparing themselves for their day ahead, the average British holidaymaker takes 2 hours 30 minutes a day to get ready just to sit by the pool or on the beach, spending only slightly more time (2 hours 48 minutes) preparing for an evening out.

It appears to be men who really take their time getting ready for a night on the town, as the average British male admitted to spending 2 hours 54 minutes perfecting their appearance, compared to women taking an average of 2 hours 42 minutes.
